Interactive Tabla Workshop with Robin Sukhadia

Join Senior Fulbright Scholar Robin Sukhadia for a 3 hour immersive workshop on tabla, the traditional drums of north India. Robin Sukhadia, a disciple of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, will focus on composition (kaidas, tuchras, mukras, thekas, tee hai, and more), recitation, correct posture, finger positioning, and tala (cycles of times). A major component of the workshop will focus on a multimedia deconstruction the history of tabla, its geographic and ethno-musicological origins, its future, and the masters that have played a pivotal role in its globalization. A limited set of drums are available for use in the workshop. Students of all levels encouraged to participate, especially complete beginners.

Robin will also be sharing how he has applied tabla to building music programs for impoverished youth in India, Nepal and around the world through Project Ahimsa, a non-profit dedicated to donating musical instruments to children worldwide.

A Master in Fine Arts graduate from the World Music program at the California Institute of the Arts, Robin Sukhadia has been studying tabla (classical north Indian drums) under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the California Institute of the Arts and the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California for the past nine years. His special focus on the musical traditions and rhythms of south Asia informs his approach to musical arrangement and composition on a wide range of concert, film, and album productions. For the past seven years, Robin has traveled internationally on behalf of Project Ahimsa, an organization committed to empowering impoverished youth through music education. He performs and teaches extensively, in both classical and contemporary contexts, and has developed innovative music education programs at the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, the Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 2010, Robin was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Award to expand his work with music education in India.
