Come to Machine Project for a special evening of photography and tabla with Robin Sukhadia (www.tablapusher.com). Currently in the middle of a Fulbright Senior Research Grant in India, Robin is back in LA for one week and will be sharing highlights from histravels/service projects (www.tablapusher.com/blog ) in India. He will also present what he is working on most intensely at the moment on tabla, compositions in Jhaptaal (cycle of 10 beats).
The evening will feature special guest performances by Rajen Sukhadia, Robin’s dad, on vocals, and Sheela Bringiharmonium.
About Robin:
Recentlycompleting a Master in Fine Arts at the California Institute of theArts, Robin Sukhadia has been studying tabla (classical north Indiandrums) under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the California Institute of theArts and the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California forthe past eight years. His special focus on the musical traditions andrhythms of south Asia informs his approach to musical arrangement andcomposition on a wide range of concert, film, and album productions. Forthe past seven years, Robin has traveled internationally on behalf ofProject Ahimsa (www.projectahimsa.org), an organization committed to empowering impoverished youth throughmusic education. He performs and teaches extensively, in both classicaland contemporary contexts, and has developed innovative music education programs at the Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles CountyMuseum of Art, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the de Young Museum inSan Francisco, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the MachineProject in Los Angeles, the Sangati Center in San Francisco and theMahatma Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, India. In 2010, Robin was awarded aFulbright Senior Research Award to expand his work with music educationin India.
